Forgiveness is not about condoning what someone has done. It’s about freeing yourself from the chains that tie you down and hold you back as a result of what happened to you. Only when you are free can you begin to move forward with confidence and courage. Only when you are free can you truly leave the victim role behind and grow into the brilliant person you were meant to be. Today I forgive others, because I refuse to be a victim.
We don’t always know how lives touch lives; we don’t always know the gifts we give to others simply by having our paths cross, even if for a moment. But what I do know is this: it is always better to line your path in life with generosity and kindness, because you may be the very person who frees someone so they can soar. Today I am committed to meeting everyone on my path with openness and gratitude, knowing with absolutely certainty that my life is touched by theirs.
Like many people, I sometimes make excuses for not taking all the action that is needed to move me closer to my dreams. These excuses are really just words that help me avoid my fear, that protect me from the unknown. Today excuses will no longer be a part of my life.
I know that I will never be able to achieve all that I desire in life if I can’t face the truth about my past. Today I gently embrace all of me – the good and the bad plus all the shame, guilt, confusion, anger, and self-loathing that have become a part of who I am – and forgive myself so that I can get on with the job of living.
